GameDay fans…. Meet Colin Boesch! He’s from Wayne, Illinois, which he describes as “a little place no one’s ever heard of in the suburbs of Chicago”. His absolute favorite meal is snow crab legs, and he and his father have always loved them.
So Colin, what made you start competing in this sport?
My first exposure to CrossFit was actually at a competition some of my college roommates were competing in. Right when I started CrossFit I knew I wanted to compete with my friends, so I’ve been doing CrossFit for about 4.5 years and competing for probably close to 4 years!
What is your favorite thing about competition day?
Besides the nervous jitters or butterflies right before the event starts, my favorite thing about competition day is the collective encouragement from the community. It doesn’t matter if the competition is at your home gym or states away, someone is always cheering for you to do your best, sometimes even if they don’t know you at all!
What’s your favorite workout or movement of all time?
My favorite all time workout is probably the Workout DT, it’s one of the few that I would love to do once a week but that would be counter-productive! My all-time favorite movement is probably GHD Sit-ups, I love the ab burn!
As an athlete, how do you approach areas of weakness in the gym?
I approach areas of weakness in the gym with a mindset that says “1% better everyday.” If it’s a movement I do not particularly enjoy, or know that I am not going to be the best at (specifically Strict Handstand Pushups), I try to make progress with the movement however I can, while simultaneously trying to accumulate volume in the movement. I’m sure I’m only a few hundred thousand more reps away from being good at Strict Handstand Pushups.
Do you have any advice for first time competitors or people thinking about trying a competition?
My advice to first time competitors is to just jump in full force! Never once have I heard someone coming back from a competition to tell me they had a horrible time.. Whether they won or lost, made the podium or didn’t. They are extremely fun days where you will be constantly surrounded by like-minded people. I’ve met new friends, new workout partners, new coaches, and tons of other people at competitions in between events, all of which have helped me on my journey to be fitter!
