Hey there GameDay fans! A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of interviewing our GameDay Mankato Women’s RX Individual Champ Laura Flazer from Des Moines, Iowa.
She’s 27 years old, and is a full time nurse in a pediatric ICU, and CrossFit is what she does for fun! She also got the chance to compete at South Regionals in 2017 as an individual, which is something that she says was a CrossFit life goal of hers!
Laura, what made you start competing in this sport?
I competed in tumbling and trampoline as a kid up through high school, then I moved out to Arizona for college. I didn’t really have anything to do there, and that’s when a friend introduced me to Crossfit and that’s how I got started!
What’s your favorite workout or movement of all time?
My favorite workout is Annie, I LOVE double-unders! I actually lost a tiebreaker (it was the 1st competition I ever did) and the tiebreaker was a 5 minute AMRAP of dubs. From then on, it became a skill I really hammered and now I really enjoy… I kinda joke that it’s my rest period when I see them in a workout! I also really enjoy barbell cycling or just anything with a barbell.
Do you have any advice for first time competitors or people thinking about trying a competition?
Go for it! You’re never gonna get any environment that’s the same as being on that competition floor, you can practice all day long but you get out on that floor and it’s totally different! You get those competition day jitters and the only way to get them out is to get out there on the floor and just do it!
What is your favorite thing about competition day?
Just being out there and actually getting to meet my fellow competitors! At this competition I actually knew 0 people coming in, so I had no idea what their strengths and weaknesses were. It was fun just to make sure I went out and did my best and gave it my all! You have to remember that that’s all you can do, and don’t compare yourself to everyone else there!
What did you enjoy about your very first GameDay Competition?
This is my first GameDay Competition, I actually saw this event on Facebook and thought it looked pretty well organized and decided to sign up! It has been a great experience so far, everything has been on time, which is much appreciated from an athlete standpoint. Everything has been run really well and the communication has been great, there’s nothing I would change and I’m looking forward to doing more GameDay competitions in the future!
