GameDay Fans… I’m excited to introduce, Sheri Thomas from CrossFit Des Plaines! She told me all about her CrossFit journey and how she fell in love with the community.
My name is Sheri Thomas! I am 47, a mom of two children: ages 15 and 9, and have been married for 17 years. I have always been active to a certain point… A bike ride here, a hike there, and sometimes a walk around the neighborhood or a trip to the park with the kids. I’ve tried “health clubs” and had memberships for years where I was doing workouts on my own, but I never stuck with anything or pushed myself. None of this provided any lasting results for me. Last January, I realized that I was at a very low point and decided that something needed to be done. Prior to that, I had been eating whatever and whenever I wanted, and I was exercising very little. I walked a couple miles a few times a week, but it was just not enough. I was at my highest weight I had ever been; 192.6 lbs. I needed to do something. So, I signed up for a free class on January 16, 2018 that I saw on the internet.
It kicked my ass. But I kept coming back.
They had a promotion available for 3 classes a week for 6 weeks, so I signed up. The first month was very challenging… not only physically but mentally. I had not made time for ME in so many years. I took that hour long class and concentrated on ME. I started doing things I didn’t know I could do. (Now, granted the weights were very light and the movements were slow, but I was doing it!) I cried the first couple weeks after my workouts. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it was my journey with myself and I needed to let it all out. The self-doubt, the unhappiness of my body, and the shame of not doing anything about it. As I started getting better, I gained more confidence and the classes and movements it got better. About 95% of the time I was going to the 9:30 class and Coach Carl was the one watching over me. He helped me with scaling options, and he always watched my form to make sure I was doing it correctly so I wouldn’t hurt myself. He pushed me when I didn’t think I wanted to be, but he believed in me and knew that I could do it.
Now, it’s my little oasis. An hour to make me happy.
Little by little I got getting stronger, lost weight, and my body was changing. I also decided it was time to change up my eating habits, so I started using My Fitness Pal and logging what I ate. I tried to make better choices, and push myself to keep to my schedule of going 5 days a week. Now, it’s my little oasis. An hour to make me happy. I never even knew what CrossFit was until that first class. I know now that it is not only a place to challenge yourself, but it’s a community, a family. Coach Cheryl has been there for me when I needed help with nutrition, taking measurements, and moral and emotional support beyond belief. Working with her, I actually see and hear that I am making results. Coach Scott not only coaches, but creates all the programming that has made my success a reality. This group of coaches and the people that I work out with are now my friends. We push each other, we encourage each other. What more can you ask for! I’ve seen the results. After 1 year I have lost close to 40 pounds, lost around 16 inches, with 6.5 of those inches off my waist, lowered my cholesterol almost 20 points, and have gained muscle everywhere.
It has been hard work, but it’s so worth it!
