Name: Justine Simmons
Home gym: CrossFit Mendota
Day job: Sr Credit Analyst
Favorite event day meal: Breakfast! Eggs, and oatmeal with berries!
Favorite cheat meal: Pizza!
Favorite movement or workout: Cleans or deadlift, and DT is probably my favorite workout!
Start by talking a little about your training leading up to the event. Did you continue your typical programming or did you make adjustments?
Well we were very fortunate that our owner/head coach, Travis, programmed all of our training into class! However in the last Gameday Comps I competed in, I did extra training for the movements in addition to our daily WOD!
What we’re you most nervous or excited for going into GameDay?
All of it! This particular comp I was more nervous than I usually am! I will say the 3 rep max front squat was one that I was pretty nervous for along with the 21/15/9 Snatch/Toes to shoulder workout as well!
”...seeing my gym-mates just tear it up on the floor in their respective divisions! I could not be more proud of all of them and how they did!
What’s something you wish would have gone better?
For sure the 21/15/9 event! My coach gave me a plan to stick to, and I went totally rogue! HA! I was in the lead by 7 points and just wanted to solidify first, but by going out too hot, I almost lost that lead! Thankfully my point spread was enough and I maintained first, but it was a total “lesson learned” moment for sure!
What was your favorite part of the weekend?
This is such a tough question! For me, by far, it was seeing my gym-mates just tear it up on the floor in their respective divisions! I could not be more proud of all of them and how they did! As far as a personal moment, probably when I finished that last workout, I knew I had to leave it all out there and I was flying! It was the proudest I’ve ever felt!
What advice do you have for new competitors?
Trust your training, trust your plan, and communicate with your judge! I cannot stress that last one enough, tell your judge your needs, they want you to have an awesome experience and are always accommodating!
