Katie’s Story:

“In May of 2009 I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. I was lucky they said. They caught it
early. I would live, all I had to do was let go of the one dream I’ve had since childhood. The dream of being a mom… In the conventional manner anyway. Lucky?! Who’s opinion was that based off of?

They gave me 24 hours to make a decision and in 10 days I was in surgery. I didn’t make the decision everyone, including my oncologist, told me I should. I chose a lesser surgery coupled with radiation, accepting the huge risk I was taking, with a small hope that I wouldn’t have to completely give up my dream.

A year later I would live to regret that decision. The cancer was back and this time there weren’t any choices other than survival. My dream was gone and with it went a huge piece of my heart and soul. The cancer would come back one more time, stealing another piece of me with it. To add insult to injury, The radiation therapy damaged my liver, leaving it marred with scar tissue. I was told if I didn’t drastically change some things in my life I would need a liver transplant in 5 years or less.
Enter CrossFit! CrossFit helped me put myself back together. All those broken pieces started to heal with every new member of the community I met and every new strength I discovered within myself. I’m not only physically stronger, I’m emotionally stronger as well. The icing on the cake: my liver enzyme tests continue to come back normal. No liver transplant necessary. In September of this year I will be 5 years cancer free! In the world of surviving cancer, that’s a major milestone!!
A little over a year ago I met the man of my dreams. When I told him biological children would be an impossibility he simply looked at me and said “You will be a mom. I don’t care what we have to do, we will make it happen!” And that’s exactly what we are doing. We were married a little over a month ago and now we are hoping to add to our family by adopting ”
